As the largest of the three txakolina D.O.s, Bizkaiko Txakolina sees an exceptionally wide variety of terrains. The combination of rugged mountains, winding rivers, and ocean create an environment where towns that are a mere couple of miles apart seem to be separated by uncrossable chasms. These separations not only distinguish the cultures of each town from one another but also create a plethora of microclimates that distinguish the vineyards from one another. And so, wholly unique sites such as the vineyards of Gurrutxaga are born. These seven hectares of mountain-side vines surround the town of Mendexa and overlook the Atlantic Ocean. The slopes here gently flow into the ocean, allowing the site to benefit from the refractory quality of the ocean below.
