Southwest of Barcelona, in the heart of the Tarragona region is the small D.O. of Montsant. Located on the mountains that surround Priorat, this young D.O. is the home of the Joan d�Anguera family estate. The Joan d�Anguera winery has origins that are common to this area: the Anguera family has been growing grapes here for over 200 years but in the 1970s they decided to try their hand at making the wine rather than selling the grapes. Here is where this winery�s story differs from others in the area. Josep d�Anguera used his extensive knowledge of the international wine scene to introduce something different into his wine: he decided on planting Syrah. Starting in 1977 he planted the grape anywhere he could find space and started his new winery. Today Josep�s sons, Joan and Josep, follow in his footsteps. They continue to use this grape in the production of their world class wines.
