Cantine Barbera

Sicily, Italy

At a Glance

• Winemaker Marilena Barbera is a third generation, Sicilian grape grower based in the southwestern region of Menfi.

• The Cantine Barbera style is all about freshness with grapes like Nero d'Avola being planted closer to the coast than the norm, taking on a brighter and more aethereal quality.

• The water off the coast of Menfi is deeper than other coastal regions like Muscadet, and Maremma Toscana. As a result of this, there's more salinity in the air. This gives more saline quality to the wines than other coastal wines.

• Farming is exclusively biodynamic in all vineyard sites. Marilena believes in low intervention winemaking and rustic/pure expressions of her terroir... but also believes strongly that her wines should be able to withstand temperature changes (as they find in Sicily itself) and the wines are notably stable and consistent across the board due to the salinity in the wines.

• Marilena's Nero d'Avola an Inzolia comes from the limestone rich "La Costa" Vineyard, which is on a hill located in the eastern part of Belicello. Her Frappatto comes from the foot of this hill which she calls the Sottostrada vineyard. Here some of the limestone gives way to a rich, but well drained, dark clay and in addition to grapes, she has a small plot of Nocellara del Belìce olives planted. Grillo and Perricone come from the Il Pozzo in the heart of Belicello. This vineyard site is an alluvial clay-based terroir made up of grey-green clay banks that are strongly affected by the coastal winds.

About Cantine Barbera

Marilena Barbera, a third-generation winemaker from Sicily, returned to her homeland after practicing Interantional law. As a woman, she was determined to put Menfi on the map and fulfill her father's dream. Her goal was to be a guardian of this incredible terroir, vines living so close to the ocean turn the sea brine into vibrant salinity. The farming is biodynamic and the winemaking in non-interventionist using spontaneous fermentation and no new oak. She makes five indigenous varietals, from five different soil types.
