Juan Antonio Ponce, at Bodegas Ponce S.L., harnesses a network of ancient vineyards in the Manchuela region of southwest Spain, where he crafts vibrant versions of the challenging Bobal grape. Ponce's journey into winemaking was not a sudden decision; it has been his passion since childhood.

He began his formal education in viticulture and oenology at the tender age of 14 at the Requena School. There, he envisioned owning his winery, a dream he pursued relentlessly. After completing his studies, he honed his skills at Compañía Telmo Rodríguez, gaining invaluable experience in winemaking and vineyard management across Spain.

In 2005, at the age of 23, Ponce returned to Manchuela with a wealth of knowledge and established a family winery, with his father providing land for their venture. Together, they adopted organic farming practices, planting native Mediterranean trees and vegetation to promote vineyard biodiversity. They adhere to traditional farming methods, such as minimal irrigation, and have built their facilities with energy-efficient materials and systems.

Ponce has become adept at working with the local Bobal grape, although he also incorporates other varieties like Albilla, Moravia Agria, Monastrell, and Garnacha. The winery is known for its early harvest, which ensures a lively acidity in their wines, especially the Bobal. They employ a traditional whole-cluster fermentation technique known as "remango," previously popular in Rioja, chilling the grapes to 8°C before fermentation.

Today, Juan Antonio continues to work alongside his father, with his children now contributing to the winemaking process. Despite his reputation as a leading figure in Manchuela's wine scene and a master of the Bobal grape, Ponce remains committed to keeping his family at the heart of his bodega.
