About Alfredo Arribas

Spanish architect and wine enthusiast Alfredo Arribas designed and oversaw development of his own winery, Portal del Priorat. Completed in 2001, this avant-garde structure was designed to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings and offer spectacular views. The Villa Clos del Portal vineyards are part of this winery; they span 40 acres and include more than 15 acres of old, low-yielding Grenache and Carignan (Cariena) vines. This vineyard was originally planted to experimental grape varieties, but over time it was expanded to include growing Syrah grapes as well. El Molar is home to this vineyard, overseen by enologist Juan Asens. Like this winery, Juan Asens solely uses organic farming methods, and his aim in doing so is to have as minimal of an impact on the environment as possible. Short macerations, fermentations with native yeasts, and expressive oak barrel ageing help the winery achieve this goal year after year, revealing the fruits' natural personality. The genuine, unadulterated expressions of their licorella soils and the singular terroir of Clos del Priorat are hallmarks of the wines produced by the Alfredo Arribas winery. Priorat DO's Clos del Portal vineyards' pre-phyloxera grapevines have mirrored the region's extensive experience. This endeavor was given the name "Trossos" by Alfredo Arribas, which translates to "terroirs." The vineyard's inaugural releases were the single-variety Grenache wines Tros Blanc and Tros Negre. After that, the winery started making Trossos Sants and Trossos Vells, both of which were made from grapes grown from ancient vines and included Grenache Blanc, Grenache, Carignan (Cariena), and Grenache Noir. These wines were made with the intention of being vintage wines, and while they retain a classic quality, they also have the distinctive personality of Alfredo Arribas wines, which comes from the full and uninhibited expression of their terroir and each varietal. To satisfy his natural curiosity, Alfredo Arribas has lately begun work on a new project in Priorat called Mas de l'A - La Morera. Located in the village of La Morera de Montsant, a region known for its diverse soils, this boutique winery produces only Grenache wines, including the red, white, grey, and hairy varieties. raised using environmentally responsible methods.
