Chenin Blanc Norgard Farms Mendocino 2020
These 1980-planted vines go back to California's grape industry's more rudimentary days. These old vines are thriving in the silty Mendocino County soils outside of Ukiah thanks to their quadrilateral training and "California sprawl" trellis. When the vines are treated with minimal intervention and grown sustainably (soon to be organic), they consistently yield some of the state's finest Chenin Blanc. This wine was made using grapes that were selected by hand, foot-trodden, then fermented on their skins for as long as a day before being pressed and let to settle for a night. The wine was aged on lees for 12 months and in tank (off lees) for 3 more months after fermentation, which took place in a combination of neutral French Oak barrels, stainless steel barrels, and a concrete egg. The resulting wine is aromatic, with hints of honeycomb, lemon curd, and lanolin, and has lovely, lively acidity and good phenolic structure.
