Pommard 1er Cru Monopole 'Clos des Poutures' 2018

It's one of the domain's most recognizable cuvées. The first vintage here was in 2013, and this terroir has been cultivated ever since. It's the antithesis of the stereotypical Pommard in that it has its own distinct character. Clos des Poutures completely subverts the stereotype of rough and macho wines. The approach is to highlight the character of the region rather than trying to change it. Pommard appears to be the site of the oldest wine-growing activity on the coast. The Gauls would have selected and propagated the Pinot noir in this location for over 2,000 years. The name of the settlement comes from a shrine devoted to the goddess Pomone. Subdued hue, typical of the reds found in this area. Strong underlying structure. Dozens upon dozens. This rose blooms only on red fruits. Strong flavor, interesting complexity, well-defined but not overpowering tannins; all good qualities. Excellent wine. To maintain, but already superb. Ten to fifteen years of ageing potential. Taste best at around 16-18 degrees Celsius. Red meat, especially if grilled or confited, and aged cheeses are perfect wine partners.
