About Egon Müller
Egon Müller produces wines that are not only the apex of German Riesling but considered to rank among the finest white wines in the world. Established in 1887, the estate includes 8 hectares of the world-renowned Scharzhofberg, with 3 hectares of ungrafted vines planted in the 19th century. Scharzhofberg is one of the true jewels of the wine world, a perilously steep slope of grey slate, heavily exposed and wind-battered. In addition, they farm four hectares in the ‘Braune Kupp’ vineyard in the neighboring village of Wiltinger, referred to as ‘Le Gallais.’
Viticulture and winemaking at Egon Müller are straightforward – soils are plowed regularly, the vines are managed by hand, and no herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers are employed. In the cellar, fermentations take place in a combination of large old oak casks and stainless steel tanks and a relatively short lees aging ensures that wines are bottled with a maximum of tension and freshness.
The resulting wines are undeniable. These are Rieslings of astonishing energy and clarity. Precise even in the warmest years, they convey a sense of transparency that is unmatched. The coolness of the slate is juxtaposed against extraordinary acidity and just the right amount of residual sugar. It is a tightrope act perfected over more than 100 years, a marvel to behold.
In John Gilman's article ‘Weingut Egon Müller – Germany's Domaine de la Romanée-Conti,’ he goes on the declare, ‘Weingut Egon Müller in Wiltingen is one of the very greatest estates in all of Germany. For many lovers of German wine, there is simply no other producer that reaches the same exalted peaks, and for them, the wines of Egon Müller occupy a rarefied strata at the very pinnacle of their genre. In much the same way as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti occupies both a contemporary and historical point of reference in its region.’
