At a Glance

• Mustela is based in the southern tip of Barbaresco in the area of Meruzzano. At 500m above sea level this is one of the highest elevation terroirs in all of Barbaresco capable of producing wines as complex as they are elegant. This area directly faces Savona in Liguria, and there's a blood orange/ citric quality in the wines that comes from these coastal wind patterns.

• The soils of Meruzzano are a blend a Calcarious clay and blue/ grey marl that are loose/oxygen rich and allow these vines to dig deep and retain balance even in extreme vintages.

• Winemaker Giuliano Luorio (who honed his skills working with Orlando Abrigo) uses a low impact approach in his farming and an old school/rustic approach in the cellar: large format neutral slavonian oak, spontaneous fermentation, extremely gentle punch downs and sulphur usage that stays below 40ppm.

• Mustela is one of the smaller producers in the T. Edward portfolio as a whole with only 15 hectares under vine and 6 in Barbaresco. Less than 500 cases of Barbaresco are produced annually.

About Mustela

The Mustela winery was established in 1978 in Trezzo Tinella, with only a small plot of Moscato grape vineyards. Over the years, the winery has grown, incorporating new vineyards and modern technologies, resulting in the creation of 9 different labels under the "Mustela" brand in 2003. Today the estate spans across 15 hectares, with approximately 8 hectares located in the Bric del Fuin hill of Trezzo Tinella, featuring mainly Moscato d'Asti vineyards, with some Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d'Alba, and Dolcetto d'Alba as well.

The vineyards have compact soils consisting of solid, bluish grey marl, layered with sand and stone, producing refined and elegant wines with good aging potential. In the Passatore district of Trezzo Tinella, fresher soils with a reddish-yellow layer of marl rich in calcium carbonate are dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc, Moscato d'Asti, and Pinot Noir, resulting in fresh and aromatic wines.
