Robert Sinskey Vineyards

For over twenty years, Robert Sinskey Vineyards has followed a simple yet challenging game plan: take great care in the vineyards, then guide the grapes gently in the cellar. From organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards in Napa Valley and Sonoma, the team now crafts a range of varieties in a house style that prizes elegance over brawn.

A second-generation, family-owned estate, Robert Sinskey Vineyards has been practicing regenerative farming since before there was a name for it. Since 1991, they’ve implemented a whole-farm philosophy of interrelationships. Informed by the influential 1928 “Agriculture” lecture by Rudolph Steiner—the father of biodynamic farming—this philosophy is founded on healing damage from mechanized farming, following nature’s innate rhythms, and stimulating natural processes. Their dedicated vineyard team, headed by Kari Flores, fosters ecosystems of microbes, fungi, insects, birds, sheep, predators, trees, and grasses, which all play crucial roles in the vitality of the vines. They’ve earned a CCOF organic certification for every vineyard, and their biodynamic practices date back to before biodynamic certifications from Demeter existed.

Over the years, their vineyard holdings have grown from 15 to 200 acres, including five sites split between the Napa and Sonoma sides of Carneros and one behind their winery in the Stags Leap District. Refreshingly, they’ve held fast to their environmental doctrine with each new site.

Winecrafter Jeff Virnig has been involved with winemaking at RSV for over 35 years, and in that time, he’s crafted wines that value elegance, finesse, purity and “guilt-free hedonism.” Robert Sinskey’s mantra has always been, “wine is not an athletic event.” They’re not making wines for the judging table, and they don’t submit bottles to critics because a competitive atmosphere is counterproductive to their overarching goal—balanced, nuanced wines that shine alongside a variety of cuisines.
