Szepsy
Tokaji, Hungary
About Szepsy
The estate is emblematic of the Tokaj region, and István Szepsy, the current winemaker, is perhaps the most influential and renowned winemaker in Hungary. He has been instrumental in redeveloping the wine industry after the fall of communism in the 1990s.
The Szepsy estate is located in Mád, with vineyards dotted throughout the hills—capitalizing on a multitude of microclimates. The soils are mostly volcanic with quartz and clay. The climate is humid in the autumn and cool in winter, lending itself to the famed production of botrytis on the grapes.
Szepsy is not just in the business of making sweet wine, though. Furmint and Hàrslevelű are championed in a variety of dry styles perfected by Szepsy. István fully embraces the dry style of Furmint and has even identified over 300 variations of the grape! His wines are robustly flavored with aromatics ranging from floral to citrus, umami, and mineral. They are age-worthy and decadent when paired with food.
