Sicily, Italy

In 2000, Andrea Franchetti decided to restore an old farm and cellars on the slopes of Mount Etna in northeastern Sicily. His first task was to clear and restore long-abandoned terraces of ancient vines on the northern slopes of the mountain, replanting at a density of 12,000 vines per hectare on thin lavic soil. Franchetti's focus on the native grape Nerello Mascalese has helped to initiate the renaissance of viticulture on the mountain and an international discovery of the wines of Etna. At Passopisciaro, he produces various expressions of terroir and altitudes through a series of crus, as well as the varieties Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, and Cesanese d'Affile. Before Franchetti's arrival, Mt. Etna's professional winegrowing community had disbanded, and commercial-scale viticulture struggled due to the cost of growing grapes in an extreme terrain and climate. However, some vines of Carricante and Nerello Mascalese remained viable on the terraces of Etna, even dating back to before 1900. Franchetti approached an owner of a neglected vineyard and began to produce wines that met his standards, stayed true to the typicity of the site, and even garnered some critical attention. In 2008, Franchetti embraced the contrade, releasing single-vineyard bottlings from each contrada he works with: Rampante, Sciaranuova, Guardiola, Porcaria, and Chiappemacine, named Contrada "G" or Contrada "S" to avoid confusion.
