About Bodegas Arzuaga

Bodegas Arzuaga sits in Valladolid, at heart of Ribera del Duero (known locally as the Golden Mile). The vines grow on La Planta, the family's estate in Quintanilla de Onésimo.

Florentino Arzuaga bought La Planta before the Ribera del Duero appellation was created. The official establishing of the appellation inspired Florentino to plant 25 hectars as an expriment despite believing the area was too cold for vines.
The winery was built a couple of years later, and Arzuaga wines began to be commercialized in the early 1990s.

The estate now covers 1,400 hectares, shared with pines, holm oaks, savin juniper, wild boar, and red deer.

Yields are kept low across the vineyards, a response to the region's poor soil fertility and harsh climate rather than a stylistic choice. Higher production would dilute the wine's flavor and concentration. The 210 hectares farmed near the winery and across La Planta see sunny days and cool, damp nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop color, sugar, and acidity. Tinto Fino, known outside Spain as Tempranillo, makes up most of the plantings, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. About 80% of the vines are over 20 years old, with yields kept to roughly 4,000 kg per hectare.
